Coronavirus in India: UP govt transfers Rs 611 crore in checking account of over 27 lakh workers during lockdown

The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday deposited Rs 611 crore within the checking account of 27.5 lakh workers within the state under the Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act (MNREGA) scheme whilst nationwide lockdown continued within the wake of the novel coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also interacted with daily wagers through video conferencing and informed them about the measures being taken by his government at this point of crisis.

Last week, Rs 1,000 was transferred within the bank accounts of quite 30 lakh daily wage workers as financial assistance as ordered by Yogi Adityanath.

The Uttar Pradesh government has also ordered that quite one lakh migrant workers who have returned to the state from other states are going to be quarantined for 14 days. "Food and other required arrangements for them are going to be made by the authorities," it said.

In Lucknow, prominent government buildings just like the Gandhi Pratishthan and Awadh Shilp Gram were converted into shelter homes for the migrant workers stranded within the city. They were brought in government buses to those centres.

Moreover, Yogi Adityanath has written a letter to the chief ministers of other states, including Arvind Kejriwal, urging them to form all the specified arrangements for people from Uttar Pradesh living in their states.

Senior bureaucrats are appointed as nodal officers to coordinate with other states where people belonging to UP live . These nodal officers are given the responsibility to make sure that they do not face any inconvenience during the 21-day lockdown.

Four prominent hotels in Lucknow, including Hyatt Regency and Marriott, are acquired by the district administration for fixing quarantine centres for the doctors and medical staff.

The government is additionally compiling an inventory of personal hospitals which can be converted into isolation centres for Covid-19 patients.
